Welcome to Arran Active. We are the Isle of Arran’s specialist outdoor shop so, if you are coming over and need some outdoor gear, wait till you get here and come and shop in a relaxed environment. If there is something specific you need when you get here, please call us on 01770 302416 and we can easily reserve it for you. And even if you don’t need anything, come and see us for information on the island’s walks and wildlife.

We stock walking boots to suit most needs and budgets. From Meindl, Scarpa and Asolo boots at the top end of the market through mid-market Trezeta to entry-level Hi-Tec boots we should have something for everyone, from £35 to £175. In women’s boots we stock from UK sizes 3–8 (European sizing 36–42) and in men’s from 6–14 (39-49). We also stock Children’s walking boots from sizes J9–6.

Walking shoes (rather than boots) are our most popular footwear. Choose from Merrell, The North Face, Meindl, Brasher, Scarpa and Hi-Tec. And, if you are after sandals in the summer months, we range Merrell, Brasher and Hi-Tec.

Not forgetting socks... As well as Brasher’s excellent range of walking socks, we now stock 1000 Mile Socks which guarantee to stop you getting blisters.

Arran has a very varied climate! So we carry a very varied selection of clothing, from wicking T-Shirts to top-end waterproof jackets. Clothing brands stocked include The North Face, Lowe Alpine & Craghoppers. We also stock Nepalese fleece-lined hats which we sell in support of Community Action Nepal, a charity set up by mountaineer Doug Scott to promote education and alleviate poverty in Nepal.

Camping Gear

It is not unknown for campers to arrive on Arran without a tent (!) so we stock a range of small tents, as well as sleeping bags, airbeds and self-inflating mattresses. Anyone flying on their way to Arran will not be able to carry any fuel for camping stoves so we keep a range of standard screw-thread gas cartridges suitable for brands such as MSR and Primus, and Campingaz CV270 and CV470 cartridges. We also stock Methylated Spirit.

I have always used Lowe Alpine packs for trekking and day-walks, so they are my brand of choice for rucksacks. From 22 Litre daysacks to 80 Litre backpacks we have it covered. We also stock smaller bags for the wee ones.

Gadgets, Books & Maps

Headtorches, binoculars, Silva compasses, multi-tools, torches, flasks, walking poles, drybags, insect repellent (whisper it!) – a whole range of other goodies. And not forgetting walking guidebooks – the unsurpassed Cicerone Guide to the Isle of Arran@ £12.95 for more challenging walks, and the excellent Hallewell guide at just £2.95 for shorter walks – and Ordnance Survey maps, not just of Arran but of the entire Scottish west coast.
